John Cunliffe, creator of ‘Postman Pat’ and ‘Rosie and Jim’, sadly passed away on the 27th September.

His warmhearted shows and lovable characters have inspired generations of children.

Growing up, I loved watching Rosie and Jim. When I was 5 years old, my mum won a raffle prize at my school’s tombola: a custom birthday cake designed by a professional, local baker. When my special day arrived, I knew exactly which characters I wanted to feature on the cake. I wish I had a photo to share (it was pre-phone camera days), but I remember how happy I was to see my favourite narrowboaters in cake form.

Editorial Manager Lesley McLean has fond memories (and a video to embarrass him when he’s older) of her son dancing around in her shoes, singing along to the theme tune to Postman Pat. “He was so young, all he knew from the song were the rhyming words at the end of each line, so we were treated to “Pat, Cat” on loop.”

Thank you for the memories, John.
