SCULPTED LIBRARY

Rotterdam based MVRDV, in collaboration with local based architects TUPDI, have created this wonderfully open and spacious library in Tianjin Binhai, China.

What at first glance resembles a sculpture of paper layers, the structure actually features floor-to-ceiling cascading bookcases and a central luminous spherical auditorium.

Books may appear to rise high, but these are cleverly disguised as perforated aluminium plates printed to represent books. These are planned to be replaced with the real thing during the next phase of the project.
